The Rattling Wall 4 is almost here!


This Friday, December 13, PEN Center USA and Narrow Books will present The Rattling Wall, Issue 4: Reading & Release at The Gallery at Bootleg Theater (2214 Beverly Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90057). The event is free. RSVP Now! Doors will open at 6:30 PM; the reading will begin at 7 PM and will feature contributors Susan Straight (Between Heaven and Here), Anne-Marie Kinney (Radio Iris), David Francis (Stray Dog Winter), Dana Johnson (Elsewhere, California), Heather Simons, Jeremy Radin (Slowdance with Sasquatch), and James Ragan (Too Long a Solitude).

Issue 4, includes new writing by T. Duncan Anderson Jr., Arielle Bernstein, Laura Bogart, Corey Campbell, George Ducker, Megan Falley, David Francis, Leah Griesmann, Ron Gutierrez, Brady Hammes, Nathalie Handal, Dana Johnson, Joe Kelly, Anne-Marie Kinney, Hunter Liguore, Ben Loory, Ruth Nolan, Ben Pack, Minh Pham, Martin Pousson, Jeremy Radin, James Ragan, Mehnaz Sahibzada, Erika Schickel, Heather Simons, Susan Straight, Amber Tamblyn, Michael Tolkin, Bruce Weigl, and Wendy Xu.


Ken Garduno is the featured artist for The Rattling Wall, Issue 4. In 2006, Garduno graduated with honors in illustration from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. After graduating, Ken pursued a career as a freelance illustrator/gallery artist. His work has been shown in galleries internationally, as well as in various publications, album art, and T-shirt designs.

BEN TEGEL: The Art of The Rattling Wall!

Please join PEN Center USA and Narrow Books for the premiere of The Art of the Rattling Wall, featuring Issue 3 artist Ben Tegel.

Illustrator Ben Tegel was born and raised in St. Louis. He studied painting at Washington University and, following graduation, left for Los Angeles to start a rock n’ roll band. Currently he illustrates for books and magazines (Flaunt, Beautiful/Decay), for music venues (House of Blues, Viper Room), for T-shirts (Vans, Hello Minor, B/D Apparel, Das Monk), and for himself. He lives in the Brookside area of L.A. with his wife, infant daughter, and two small dogs.

For the third issue of The Rattling Wall, Tegel created eighteen new illustrations using India ink and watercolor washes of Payne’s gray. The journal’s inside covers feature preliminary drawings and reference sketches. The outside cover artwork is an original watercolor piece.

For the first leg of the The Rattling Wall, Issue 3 book tour, we’ll be stopping by The Pop-Hop in Highland Park on November 28, at 7pm. This event will feature a presentation and Q&A with Featured Artist Ben Tegel and Narrow Books Art Director, Mark Dischler.

They will discuss the making of the artwork and design of the book in The Pop-Hop salon, followed by readings from Issue 3 contributors Trinie Dalton, Ben Epstein, Marytza K. Rubio, and Kim Young. A book signing and drinks to follow after the reading. RSVP on Facebook!

Directed by Danny Corey & Heather Simons, the short film NAME THIS PLACE chronicles the making of The Rattling Wall‘s 3rd issue. Originally screened at the journal’s reading and release event at Hollywood Forever Cemetery on November 10th, NAME THIS PLACE features interviews with editor Michelle Meyering, Narrow Books co-founder and art director Mark Dischler, and issue 3 featured artist Benjamin Tegel, as well as writer-contributors Panio Gianopoulos, David Ulin, Kate Reeves, Marytza K. Rubio, Casey Curry, and Joyce Carol Oates! If you couldn’t make it to the release event, you should check this out immediately!
