The Rattling Wall, Issue 5, at SKYLIGHT

On Wednesday, September 9, 2015, PEN Center USA and Narrow Books will present The Rattling Wall, Issue 5, at Skylight Books (1818 N Vermont Ave, Los Angeles, California 90027). The reading will begin at 7:30 PM and will feature contributors David Ulin, Cecil Castellucci, Rita Williams, David Francis, Julianne Ortale, and Susan Berman. Come & celebrate!

The Rattling Wall, Issue 5, includes new work by artist Kristina Collantes. The journal is published by Narrow Books and funded by PEN Center USA.

Wednesday, July 29, PEN Center USA and Narrow Books will present The Rattling Wall, Issue 5: Reading & Release at The Hotel Figueroa (939 S Figueroa St, Los Angeles, California 90015). The event is free. RSVP Now! Doors will open at 7:30 PM; the reading will begin at 8 PM and will feature contributors Derrick C. Brown, Shanna Mahin, Katie Bain, Amelia Gray, and Rita Williams. Plus, Will Alexander, Douglas Kearney, and Dr. Ashaki Jackson reading Wanda Coleman.

Ken Garduno was born and raised in Los Angeles and graduated with honors in illustration from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. His work has been featured in many commercial projects, including album covers, T-shirt designs, and publications from the Penguin Group, L.A. Weekly, and the Village Voice. He has exhibited in solo and group shows at LeBasse Projects, WWA Gallery, Cella Gallery, Gallery 1988, and elsewhere. He is known for his portraits of lusty women, extraterrestrial beings, and otherworldly vistas. Gouache and ink are his favorite mediums to work with. He illustrates at his studio near downtown Los Angeles.

For the fourth issue of The Rattling Wall, Garduno created twenty new illustrations using a variety of brush pens, drawing pens, and sketch markers. The cover artwork, created specifically for this book, is done in gouache on printmaking paper.

Opening night reception! New artwork, book signing, readings, and drinks!

This Friday, December 13, PEN Center USA and Narrow Books will present The Rattling Wall, Issue 4: Reading & Release at The Gallery at Bootleg Theater (2214 Beverly Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90057). The event is free. RSVP Now! Doors will open at 6:30 PM; the reading will begin at 7 PM and will feature contributors Susan Straight (Between Heaven and Here), Anne-Marie Kinney (Radio Iris), David Francis (Stray Dog Winter), Dana Johnson (Elsewhere, California), Heather Simons, Jeremy Radin (Slowdance with Sasquatch), and James Ragan (Too Long a Solitude).

Issue 4, includes new writing by T. Ken Garduno is the featured artist for The Rattling Wall, Issue 4. In 2006, Garduno graduated with honors in illustration from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. After graduating, Ken pursued a career as a freelance illustrator/gallery artist. His work has been shown in galleries internationally, as well as in various publications, album art, and T-shirt designs.

Please join PEN Center USA and Narrow Books for the premiere of The Art of the Rattling Wall, featuring Issue 3 artist Ben Tegel.

Illustrator Ben Tegel was born and raised in St. Louis. He studied painting at Washington University and, following graduation, left for Los Angeles to start a rock n’ roll band. Currently he illustrates for books and magazines (Flaunt, Beautiful/Decay), for music venues (House of Blues, Viper Room), for T-shirts (Vans, Hello Minor, B/D Apparel, Das Monk), and for himself. He lives in the Brookside area of L.A. with his wife, infant daughter, and two small dogs.

For the third issue of The Rattling Wall, Tegel created eighteen new illustrations using India ink and watercolor washes of Payne’s gray. The journal’s inside covers feature preliminary drawings and reference sketches. The outside cover artwork is an original watercolor piece.

THE RATTLING WALL, Issue 3: Reading & Release

Sat. November 10, 8pm – Continuing its collaborative reading series, PEN Center USA will present The Rattling Wall, Issue 3, at Hollywood Forever‘s Masonic Lodge on November 10, 2012, at 8pm, featuring readings by L.A. Times book critic David L. Ulin, James Meetze, Jillian Lauren , Angel Nafis, Sean Carswell, and Joshua Mohr. Prior to the reading a short film by Danny Corey and Heather Simons, which details the making of the issue, will be screened, as well as artwork projected by Issue 3 featured artist, Ben Tegel. The event will finish with a book signing.

8th Annual Printers’ Ball

Narrow Books donates to The 8th Annual Printers’ Ball, Fri. July 20, 6pm – We’ve just sent out a bundle of The Rattling Wall and Two Letters to The Printers’ Ball in Chicago! Presented by Poetry Magazine, this year’s theme is TIME WARP and highly encourages costumes, along with face painting and an open bar onsite in Downtown’s historic Ludington Building. Stop by Columbia College Chicago this Friday, July 20 from 6pm-11pm for thousands of free books, broadsides and magazines donated by publishers from all over the literary galaxy.
